Quiet Luxury, Done Properly: Why LAUFEN Is Changing How We Think About Bathrooms

For years, the bathroom was treated as the least glamorous room in the house: functional, standardised, a space you moved through rather than lived in. That's shifting fast. Cambridge homeowners increasingly want their bathroom to do more than wash and dry, they want it to feel considered, restorative, worth spending time in.

LAUFEN has been leading that shift for over a century. The Swiss manufacturer treats the bathroom as a personal space rather than a clinical one, and backs that philosophy with serious design pedigree, collaborating with names like Patricia Urquiola and Marcel Wanders to push what's genuinely possible in the room.

Three principles run through everything LAUFEN makes: clean, considered form, intelligent use of materials, and production that stays sustainable and European. The result is instantly recognisable, sharp architectural shapes paired with natural, tactile textures, confident rather than showy.

Why ARUN Stands Out

Of everything in the LAUFEN range, our director Andrew has a particular soft spot for one collection: ARUN.

The name comes from Sanskrit, meaning the first light of dawn, and the collection is built around that feeling, a genuine moment of calm to open or close your day, rather than another functional stop in the morning routine.

What sets ARUN apart is the detail work. Warm wood veneers in light oak and rich walnut sit against cool stoneware, a pairing that rewards touch as much as it does the eye. The drawer grips are softly curved and recessed so the wood grain runs unbroken across the full cabinet front. Look closer and the drawer edges are cut at 45 degrees, meeting the worktop almost seamlessly. It's the kind of detail most people won't consciously register, until it's missing.

Inside, the same care applies. Soft-close drawers pull fully out to reveal smoked glass organisers with anti-slip mats, so everything has a defined place.

Craftsmanship With a Conscience

ARUN is manufactured entirely in Europe, which keeps transport emissions down and supports responsible forestry practice. Every piece of timber is sourced from certified, sustainably managed European forests. It's an investment in longevity as much as looks, the kind of piece built to still earn its place in the room in fifteen years, not just on installation day.

Come and See It Properly

Photographs only carry a material like this so far. The weight of the stoneware, the grain running through the walnut, the way the drawer edges meet the worktop, these are things you need to see and feel in person.

Visit our Dry Drayton showroom for a proper look. There's no town centre traffic to navigate, plenty of free parking on site, and a coffee while you browse. Take your time with the samples and get a genuine sense of how ARUN would sit in your own space, or book a home design consultation to begin the process properly.
